Taiwan National Choir

The Taiwan National Choir was established under the auspices of the Ministry of Education in 1985 to assist young vocalists in their career development and to offer the audiences of Taiwan interesting and challenging choral programming.  In the past twenty  years,  the choir has performed more than 400 concerts. Its present director is Professor Kuo-En Chang, who is also the president of the National Taiwan Normal University.  In 2007, maestra Agnes Grossmann, a conductor of vast international experience in both choral (Vienna Boys Choir) and orchestral music (Montreal Symphony) was appointed Artistic Director to further shape this choir into a unique instrument of exceptional homogeneity, and expand the choir's repertoire to encompass all styles of classical music from the Renaissance to the music of today.

In recent years, the Taiwan National Choir has visited Korea, Singapore, Malaysia, France, the United States, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Spain, and Hawaii etc.  It was invited to collaborate with Domingo, Carreras, and Diana Ross in their joint concert "The Sounds across the Century" in 1997. It was the guest chorus in Beethoven's Choral Symphony with the  Staatskapelle Dresden (cond. Giuseppe Sinopoli) and with New York Philharmonic (cond. Kurt Masur) in 2000 and 2002 respectively. It was invited to join José Carreras in his concert "José Carreras Tenor Concert" in 2003. Then it had the honor to be the representative of Taiwan performing at the UNESCO annual conference for music education held in Spain in 2004. In addition, the Taiwan National Choir has performed in Die Zauberflöte, La Boheme, Madame Butterfly, Don Giovanni, Tristan und Isolde, Norma, The Great Wall, Snow in August, and at the Inaugurations of the 9th , 10th & 11th President and Vice-President of the Republic of China, at the Ceremony of Presidential Cultural Awards, the Chieh Shou Hall Concert in the Presidential Building, the End-of-the-Year Concert in the Presidential Building, and the Starlight Concert for Double Tens Day 2002.

The repertoire of Taiwan National Choir is extensive, ranging from folk songs from various countries and lieder to motets, masses, cantatas, and oratorios. Its members are primarily students of vocal music plus a number of accomplished singers who have graduated from the music schools overseas.  It is the most accomplished and welcomed chorus funded by the government. Its plans are to become a full-time professional chorus in the near future.
