The Oboe Goes BaRock

"Joy in music-making was paired with technical perfection, well-founded knowledge with imaginative arranging."

Press Kit

BaRock is crossover--pop, folk, and other memorable melodies presented in the classical style. This is "a wonderful symbiotic marriage between pop and classical music," says the Junge Welt. Manuel Munzlinger--described as a "Nigel Kennedy on the oboe" (Main-Echo)--plays oboe, oboe d'amore, piccolo oboe and English horn, accompanied by Romy Nagy on cello and Andreas Walter on cembalo or piano. Munzlinger, not satisfied with a simple reworking of the original, gives each work its very own classical nuance. The Berliner Morgenpost adds: "Not only do [Munzlinger's arrangements add modulation: his oboe dances light-footedly with Nagy's cello passages, while a true-to-form Walter weaves his masterful piano or harpsichord melodies into a wonderful composition."

The question, "How would Beatles compositions have sounded had they lived in the 17th century?" is answered in the Beatles Suite for Oboe and Basso Continuo; "Michelle" is presented as ragtime in the style of Scott Joplin; "And I Love Her" as one of Erik Satie's gymnopedies- -- and "a brilliant version of 'When I'm 64' played with accentuated speed and dynamic changes, really sounds as if Benjamin Britten had taught Paul McCartney how to compose" (Main-Echo).

In addition to Beatles songs in Baroque and Romantic styles, other pop-music is transformed. Oboe Goes BaRock has arranged works of Billy Joel, Michael Jackson, Paul Simon, Eric Clapton, Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass; an Elvis Presley theme is turned into a Passacaglia, and an Irish folksong into a furious Capriccio in the style of Tchaikovsky.
